At the Avrio Advocati Spring Conference in Bonn, Emmett Maginn, Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution at Caldwell & Robinson Solicitors, explored how Artificial Intelligence is transforming business operations and the legal challenges that accompany its adoption.

Addressing lawyers from across Europe, the US and beyond, Emmett highlighted the opportunities AI presents through automation, content creation, predictive analytics and decision-making tools, while also examining the legal risks associated with these technologies.

Drawing on his experience advising clients operating in Northern Ireland and across the border in Ireland, and therefore within the EU, Emmett discussed the practical challenges businesses face when navigating differing regulatory frameworks.. He highlighted how organisations trading across multiple jurisdictions must consider the implications of evolving AI regulation and ensure their governance structures remain compliant in the UK, EU, US and beyond.

Key issues discussed included data protection, confidentiality, intellectual property, discrimination, accountability and liability for AI-generated outputs. Emmett emphasised that businesses must maintain human oversight and implement robust governance frameworks to manage risk effectively.

The presentation also considered the evolving regulatory landscape, with different approaches emerging across the EU, UK and US. As AI continues to develop, lawyers have a critical role in helping clients balance innovation with legal compliance and risk management.

Emmett Maginn leads the Avrio Advocati AI and Data Protection Community, a working group of international lawyers focused on the legal implications of AI and emerging technologies.
